Special exhibition Yukio Yashiro and the Museum Yamato Bunkakan at His 50th Death Anniversary: The Joy of Loving Art

A history of East Asian art research by an art historian who loved art, and whose ideal was to create a museum where people could view artworks while enjoying the beauty of nature.

Yukio Yashiro was an art historian who researched Botticelli’s works. He compiled an East Asian art collection that has become the core exhibit of the Museum Yamato Bunkakan, where he served as its first director. The exhibition traces the footsteps and viewpoints of studies on East Asian art from Yashiro's perspective of appreciation of art.

Representations of Weather in East Asian Art

The exhibition explores how constantly changing meteorological phenomena have been represented in East Asia: blowing wind, pouring rain, falling snow, floating clouds and haze, and calm sunny skies.

Compare and Enjoy Art Works of the Rinpa School

The exhibition compares the works of Kōetsu, Sōtatsu, Kōrin, Kenzan, Hōitsu, and other artists of the Rinpa school with classical works and those of different schools of the same period to explore their respective characteristics and appeals.

Special exhibition Beauty of the Performing Art Traced through Bugaku Masks and Drawings

Bugaku is a performing art with the longest history in Japan, having been performed at ceremonies of the imperial court, temples, and shrines since the Nara period (710–794). This exhibition presents the art developed in the imperial court, Nanto, and Tennoji through Bugaku masks and drawings.

Painting the Waterside

Many paintings depict representations of water - from the rushing current that splashes onto the gently shimmering surface. Visit the waterside paintings at the Museum Yamato Bunkakan, which is situated by a pond.

Character Representations and Stories in East Asia

The exhibition introduces diverse representations of people and stories that developed in East Asia through works depicting Chinese myths and legends, historical tales, and anecdotes based on Confucian and Buddhist teachings.

The exhibition features Asian potteries from China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. They have both similarities and differences. Notice the influences between the areas or developments unique to each area.
