Tomioka Tessai and Modern Nihonga Paintings

Tomioka Tessai is a literati artist that represents modern Japan. His paintings will be introduced alongside the works of modern Nihonga artists, such as Yokoyama Taikan.

The Buddhist Art of Japan

We will be displaying the Buddhist art of Japan, from the splendid scriptures made by the nobility in the Heian period to the otsu-e art born from the folk beliefs of the Edo period.

Special Exhibition: The Art of Sake, a Gift from the Heavens

It is said that sake is a wonderful gift from the heavens. This display will feature East Asian artworks related to sake and trace the history of a drink that brings gods as well as people together.

Sesson and His Contemporary Painters

Sesson was an artist monk who was active in the Eastern Japan during the sixteenth century. This exhibit will display Sesson’s works, as well as the works of artists who were active in the same era at the Capital, with a focus on the special charm of Sesson’s unique paintings.

The Pottery of Japan: From Jomon Earthenware to Modern Kyo Ware

We will be displaying the pottery of Japan, which has a history as long as ten thousand years. We invite you to enjoy the wide variety of works, from the strong shapes of the Jomon earthenware made in the primitive age to the elaborate Kyo ware made in the modern era.
